Blogging, Schmogging...and Easter!

What better time to start blogging again about health and nutrition than right before Easter?

Since I have been on a hiatus (not doing anything of any significance other than chasing after two toddlers and cooking up a little sister for them), nothing much in the nutrition world has been breaking news. Well, maybe some, like a new nutrition food label, but that's not been breaking news. But, for some reason, I think about exercise and nutrition approximately 67% of my day and then I think about this blog approximately 0.5% of my week.

I have already mentioned Easter a few times before. So, what else can I say about this holiday that is often times compared to Thanksgiving in the amount of calories and sweets ingested?
Well, what I have been telling participants in my weight loss study is to log your foods! If your goal is to lose weight, or increase your protein, or decrease your sugar, or whatever, the only way you will know if you are succeeding is by logging your foods. So, in the case of Easter, if your goal is to not eat 2,000 calories' worth of ham, sides, and pastel-colored candies, then your best bet is to track. Curious about how all this adds up?

Honey baked ham - 5 ounces =                      217 calories (I dare you to eat just 5 ounces pre-cooked)
Scalloped potatoes - 1 cup =                          216 calories
Green bean casserole -1 cup =                       160 calories
Dinner roll (1 large) =                                    133 calories
   w/ 1 tablespoon butter =                              102 calories
Salad
  w/ 2 tablespoons vinegar and oil dressing = 170 calories
  w/ 1 ounce nuts/seeds=                                 170 calories
Frosted cake (1 slice from 8 inch size)=         250 calories

Total =                                                             1418 calories

Eh, not bad if you're shooting for 2,000 calories/day. Then throw in 2 glasses of wine (295 calories), that one deviled egg you had as an app (124 calories), and that handful of pastel covered chocolate candies (100 calories) and you have close to a days' worth of calories.

I can sit here all day and tell you how to manage your weight, but it's common sense, right? So instead, I'll switch it up and tell funny anecdotes about parenting twins. But, that's for another post because it doesn't really fit into this one.
Until next time... (hopefully it's not another year)
