BPA - Big Pain in the Ass

Bite This: So what happens to a blog when you only have 10 followers? You forget to write. Or get too busy to write, but think about writing, but know that if you are too busy to write those 10 followers will understand.

So BPA? You have heard about it, you know it's not cool, but what exactly does it do to the body to make it so uncool? BPA does not, in fact, stand for Big Pain in the Ass. But it does stand for Bisphenol-A and it can threaten your health.
BPA is found in plastic wrap, plastic bottles and containers, and coats the inside of metal cans of food. It can also be found in refrigerator shelving, water bottles and flooring. The reason why it can be harmful to humans is that it mimics the hormone estrogen which can lead to breast cancer and has also been shown to cause hyperactivity, neurotoxin effects, cardiovascular effects, miscarriages and early puberty. You may have heard a recent interview on the radio with Cheryl Crow who attributes her breast cancer to BPA from drinking from a water bottle - especially ones left in the heat in the car. Because BPA mimics estrogen, it can be stored in the body (as estrogen is stored in fat cells), but is usually flushed out after a week of no exposure. Just switching to fresh food and not microwaving foods in plastic containers or with plastic wrap can drop the amount of BPA in your urine by 60%.
Think your body does not contain BPA? BPA was found in 93% of 400 urine samples tested, including women of child-bearing age, women who were breast-feeding and young infants.
Just another reason to eat fresh foods.

Sound bite: This week try flushing the BPA out of your system. Do not microwave in plastic containers, drink from water bottles containing BPA or eat canned foods. Try eating only fresh foods, or steam them without using plastic containing BPA.
